About Bg Free

Bg Free is a free background-removal tool built on a simple idea: removing the background from a photo shouldn't require an account, a subscription, or uploading your image to someone else's server.

Everything runs locally in your browser using an on-device machine learning model. There's no backend processing your photos — which also means there's no server cost to pass on to you, so the tool stays free with no usage limits.

What it does

Upload a photo and Bg Free isolates the subject from its background in a few seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on your device. From there you can download a transparent PNG, drop in a solid color or your own background photo, blur the backdrop for a portrait-mode look, and clean up any rough edges by hand with the Magic Brush.

Why it runs entirely in your browser

Most background removers work by uploading your photo to a server. That's a reasonable design, but it means your image leaves your device, and it means the service needs to cover server costs somehow — usually with accounts, usage limits, or a paywall. Bg Free takes the other path: it downloads a segmentation model once and runs it on your device via WebAssembly. Your photo never has to leave your browser to get processed, and because there's no per-image server cost, there's no reason to meter usage or ask for a signup.

The tradeoff is real and worth stating plainly: an on-device model that has to fit in a browser download is smaller than what a well-resourced server can run, so on genuinely difficult images — wide open landscape photography with no distinct subject, for example — it can fail where a heavier server-side model might succeed. That's a deliberate tradeoff in exchange for privacy and cost, not an oversight.

Who built it

Bg Free is an independent project by R2Designs. It's built and maintained as a side project, iterated on based on what's actually useful for real editing work rather than what fits a pricing tier.
